Dock Jumping / Dock Diving / Dock Dog Classes
Sacha, a former Rummy student, jumping 25’8 at Discovery Green, July 2011.
At Pet Fest in October 2011 she jumped 27’5.
The World Record is 28’10!
Sacha will be going to DockDogs World Championships in 2012 to compete!
Dock Jumping is one of the world’s fastest growing canine sports and at Rummy’s, we want to inspire people to participate in this fun, addictive sport. Dock Jumping is an international dog sport where dogs jump from a dock into water. DockDogs started in 2000 and appeared at the ESPN Great Outdoor Games. In 2008, the United Kennel Club (UKC) added dock jumping as a recognized UKC sport, so dogs can get UKC titles in dock jumping as they do in agility and other competitive dog sports.

These are tentative dates - exact dates determined by early March.
We are unsure about exact start dates because during the winter, Rummy’s pool has a winter dome over it so we can keep swimming all year long in warm water. The dome doesn’t cover the dock. When the weather is warm enough, the dome comes off and the dock is pushed back up to the pool. We are having a warm winter, so we may be able to start classes as early as March 11 or March 18. But we won’t know until we get closer to those dates. The other class start dates depend on when the first class starts as well other Dock Dog events that may be added during the year so the dates may be changed around so you can attend / participate in these events.
Classes are $200. You get 2 hours of training weekly x 4 weeks = 8 hours. PLUS each student receives 1 FREE private hour of swimming to practice off the dock, which must be used prior to your last class.
We offer several Dock Jumping Classes every year March through October. We announce the classes on our facebook page, on our email list and this page. If you would like to be on our email list to get notice, send an email to Lisa@RummysBeachClub.com.
If none of the class times are convenient for you, call us and schedule a private swimming appointment. The owner, Lisa, will coach you and your dog privately. Coach Jana can also be present for an additional charge. If you have a reactive dog, it may be better to learn dock jumping privately. Or do both – we just want to help you and your dog have FUN!
Why Take Classes at Rummy’s?
Rummy’s was the first pool in Texas to offer Dock Jumping Classes, beginning in 2010. We are the ONLY facility in Texas with a facility designed to teach beginner Dock Jumping Classes.
ANY dog can be a dock dog if they know how to swim and have a VERY STRONG toy drive. That toy drive is the reason they jump off the dock. If your dog does not know how to swim, we will teach him - that is what we do at Rummy’s. Many dogs don’t know how to swim - even some water dogs. Just call us and schedule an appointment BEFORE you join our class.
If your dog knows how to swim, but doesn’t know how to jump into a pool – Rummy’s class is perfect for you. We have a beach entry and an adjustable dock so your dog gradually learns how to jump into the pool at various heights before learning to jump off a dock that is 2’ above the water – competition height. Teaching a dog to jump off a ramp that high from the very beginning may scare your dog away from the sport.
If your dog consistently jumps into a pool from a 2’ high dock, Rummy’s may not be the best place to train as we are a beginner pool only and other facilities may be better suited. Some people still take our class because of our knowledgeable and experienced coach and former students you get to meet.
Once a year, Rummy’s has a get together for all former dock jumping students so everyone can get to know each other and learn from each other. When you take our class and see your dog have FUN - it really is addicting. Each time you practice your dog gets better and you get prouder. Then, at competitions you meet up with former Rummy students and see new faces and meet their dogs – it is amazing how fast this sport is growing in this area.
Rummy students encourage and support each other. Like Sacha, the dog in the picture on the top of this page. You will get to meet Sacha and her handlers and several other former Rummy students. Then, when you go to competitions you will know several other people there. Everyone has different advice to offer you as you learn this sport because everyone’s dog is different and we all have to learn what works best for our dog.
Wherever you take your class – BEFORE YOU SIGN UP - ask how long the instructor has been jumping their dog in Dock Dog Competitions. What is their dog’s farthest jump? What other dog sports does their dog participate in? If they are coaching a dog sport, they should be doing it, right? And the longer they have been doing it, the more they can teach you, right? Before you spend your money and time, ask questions.
Our Coach
This is the second year Coach Jana has taught Dock Jumping at Rummy’s. Jana uses only positive reinforcement to teach and believes the ONLY reason to be involved in Dock Jumping – or any canine sport - is to have FUN!
Jana rescued her dog Chewie in 2005 and they have been dock jumping since 2008. Chewie’s personal best jumps are:
Big Air 19'11"! Big Air = how far out your dog jumps.
Extreme Vertical - 5'10"! Extreme Vertical = how high up your dog jumps.
Speed Retrieve - 8.3 seconds! Speed Retrieve = how fast your dog gets a toy at the end of the pool.
Chewie’s national titles:
SJ = Senior Jumper (Regional & National) - Dock Dogs
SR-E = Speed Retrieve Express - Dock Dogs
EV-C = EV Cadet - Dock Dogs
CD = AKC Obedience Companion Dog
CGC = Canine Good Citizen
RN = Rally Obedience Novice
FM = Flyball Master
TF = Top Flight
Chewie also competes in Agility and surfs. Skydiving is next!
Jana rescued Keeper, a Lab puppy in 2011. Keeper’s personal best jump is:
Big Air 13'!
Keeper’s national titles are:
JJ = Junior Jumper - Dock Dogs
SR-E = Speed Retrieve Express - Dock Dogs
CGC = Canine Good Citizen
FM = Flyball Dog Excellent
When you meet Keeper – hide your dog’s toys – what’s his is his and what’s yours is his!

A Few More Things:
No one under age 15 permitted. At Rummy’s, dogs are the focus of our attention. If we allow children, that focus changes.
No dog treats allowed at Rummy’s.
Dogs must be 6 months old to compete in a Dock Jumping event. Dogs 4 months of age are allowed in our class.
Any breed of dog is allowed. No aggressive dogs or people allowed.
If there is inclement weather, call Lisa @ 713-446-3805 to see if class will be held.
Though not mandatory, it is appreciated when dogs have a reliable sit, come and ability to be under control without treats. NO TREATS ALLOWED IN THIS CLASS!
No Flexi leashes or retractable leashes at Rummy’s or at competitions.
Cameras and video cameras are permitted and encouraged. Waterproof cases recommended.
Dress to train on land and in water. Good water shoes are recommended for training as well as Dock Jumping events as there is always mud around the pool. Keen, Sketchers, Land’s End and many companies make good waterproof shoes you can wear on land and in water and will help keep falling and slipping to a minimum. Quality water clothes at a good price can be found at Liquid Peace. Or look around your house for workout clothes with nylon, polyester and / or spandex. Cotton gets heavy and stretches out in water.
Coffee, Coke, Diet Coke, Dr. Pepper, 7-Up, water and cookies, donuts, etc. are available in Rummy’s kitchen. Please help yourself. PLEASE put your trash in our recycling containers - we recycle everything.
Please pick up your poop.
It is costly to keep a dog pool clean. Please help us by not allowing your dog to roll in the grass and then swim and then roll in the grass and then swim. There are several dogs in each dock jumping class and if each dog does that, you can imagine what the pool looks like for private clients after class. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.
