Dock diving (also called dock jumping) is one of the fastest-growing dog sports. It’s exciting, great exercise, and incredibly fun for both dogs and owners. If you’re just getting started, here are some practical tips to set your dog up for success.
At Rummy’s Beach Club in Spring, Texas, we offer private dock diving training in a safe, controlled environment with an experienced trainer. We have a bigger dock and this is how we do it:
Water Confidence is a Must - Before attempting jumps, your dog should be a confident swimmer. Don't have a confident swimmer? Come to Rummy's We can help!
First, have the dog jump in from the side of the pool. Beginners do better starting with an easy jump. This helps build confidence without the pressure of a big leap.
Praise Heavily
- No matter what their jump looks like, praise heavily. This is a fun sport. It is about the dogs having fun. Use their favorite toy and only use it when doing dock jumping.
- Reward every attempt — even if they only put their front paws on the dock.
- Keep sessions short and positive. Always positive. Again, it is about the dogs.
Focus on having fun! If it's not fun, your dog may not want to pursue the spot
Be Patient and Consistent. Some dogs take to dock diving immediately, while others need several sessions. Never force your dog - let them bild confidence naturally.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Pushing your dog off the dock
Making sessions too long
Getting frustrated
Skipping the swimming foundation
